Novo Nordisk in Montes Claros, Brazil
Novo Nordisk has been in Brazil since the early 1990s. Site Montes Claros is located in Minas Gerais, in the south eastern part of Brazil.
Around 700 employees work at the facilities, that are located in the industrial district of Montes Claros. Site Montes Claros is dedicated to production activities such as ALP enzyme production, diabetes type 2 tablet packaging and formulation, and filling and packaging of insulin products. Our products, except for the ALP enzyme, are mostly delivered to the global market.
Novo Nordisk stressed its commitment to Brazil in 2003 by announcing a US$ 230 million investment for three expansion projects at Site Montes Claros. Around 87% were allocated to the building of a new filling plant, while the remaining part was invested in expansions of packaging lines for diabetes type 2 tablets, Novonorm®, and also for the building of a fermentation plant to produce ALP, which is an enzyme used in insulin production.
The latest investment was announced in August 2006. Approximately US$ 50 million were to fund the expansion of existing facilities by setting up a FlexPen® assembly facility, which is expected to start delivering products in 2009.
Jobs in Montes Claros
The investments made it possible to create approximately 350 direct new jobs in Montes Claros, adding to the existing 390 in late 2003. The construction of the new facilities mobilized more than 100 different contractors and subcontractors from all over Brazil. In the most intense period of construction, an average of 2,200 construction workers indirectly hired could be seen at the site.
Triple Bottom Line
The investments made by Novo Nordisk raised a lot of interest in the company from local and regional stakeholders and the Brazilian press. Novo Nordisk brought enthusiasm to Montes Claros and boosted the local economy. Also, the company created interest in the fight against diabetes. For three consecutive years, the city took part in the Global Diabetes Walk with 2,045 walkers in 2004, 8,480 in 2005 and 2,456 in 2006. Associations, patient associations, universities, local partners, state police, etc. participated.
Novo Nordisk is committed to supporting the development of the local community and has been engaged in initiatives such as:
- Local DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education).
- Donations to the state police to improve city security.
- Fund raising and donations to the local diabetes patients association together with local partners.
- Support to Laborearte, an NGO that teaches young kids from the poorest areas in town to make art out of scrap.
- Environmental and health education programs for teachers from public schools with regional partners (Relictos Foundation).
- Football School Social Project - 60 kids from the neighbourhood who played soccer and received assistance from Novo Nordisk, and won the Tivoli Cup’s group B level championship in 2005.
Novo Nordisk Site Montes Claros is ISO 9001:2000 certified and is currently headed for ISO 14000 and OHSAS 18000 certification. Our facilities currently hold the lowest CO2 emissions among Novo Nordisk production sites worldwide, thanks to a varied energy matrix counting strongly on hydroelectric energy and biomass.
In April 2007, Novo Nordisk Site Montes Claros was granted the Novo Nordisk Safety Award, being the first production site ever outside of Denmark to receive such a distinction due to its high levels of safety indicators.
All liquid sewage from the site is treated in the local waste water system and approximately 10.5 million litres of water per month are treated before being released back to the environment. That makes up for the water consumption of approximately 1,700 people on a monthly basis. Part of the recycled water is also used to irrigate gardens around the facilities.
Selective garbage collection is also part of our routine and all employees are trained in order to properly dispose of items.
